Track One
Produced by Terry Menta
Once primarily the domain of expensive imaging and workflow software vendors,
document management is now achievable through numerous mechanisms: 1) specialized
document management software, 2) functions embedded within software suites,
and 3) functions embedded within operating environments. Choosing among
these competing approaches requires an understanding of the range of software
solutions available, and a method for discerning the different characteristics
of the document and work process to which the products will be applied.
Once software is chosen, cost-effective and secure mass storage determines
success. Recent developments in CD technology have the potential to bring
document management to a mass audience. The convergence of document management
software with CD technology will be the emphasis of the document management
theme.
WORKSHOP on Document Management
Workshop Description: This session will present the basics in document management,
with a special emphasis on the relative merits of competing approaches.
Typical hardware and software subsystems will be examined, with an emphasis
on CD-R drives and CD-ROM towers. Identifying appropriate solutions according
to the attributes of different documents will be a key element for attendees,
who will also learn about the different products available in each document
management solution type.
SESSIONS
Theme Topics Covered In Sessions: Comparing hardware & software systems; CD-R drives; appropriate solutions based on document types; multi-driver CD-ROM towers; reducing access time & storage costs; comparing storage & retrieval systems; mass market user interfaces for image capture & viewing; getting high-end results by combining CD-R & mass market database management software with new consumer softwares; providing account data on CD-ROMs for financial institution customers; facilitating business process reengineering in customer's workplace.
Session Title: Major Document Storage and Retrieval
System Case History
Speaker: Part Gartman, VP Marketing, Macess Corporation
This session will present an end-user project where multi-drive CD-ROM towers
were used to reduce member files access time by a factor of ten while reducing
storage cost substantially. Describing the major components of a CD centric
Document Management System Project. Project planning and implementation
milestones as well as major system components will be covered.
Session Title: Patent Information Publisher Case History
Speaker: Dave Gillis, Principal Imerge Consulting
This presentation will discuss how an Information Publisher delivered On-Demand
Printing from over 2 terabytes of CD-ROM based on-line Patent Information.
The CD-ROM based product was first published for current awareness of patents
and subsequently a backfile was produced for the past 20 years. From this
backfile, one to a thousand Patent copies were produced to customer order,
available on CD-ROM.
Session Title: Vendor Presentations of Mass
Market User Interfaces for Image Capture and Viewing.
Session Moderator: Terry Menta, Partner, Imerge Consulting
Until the advent of Windows 95, image capture and viewing required expensive,
proprietary software on each users' desktop. This session will present recently
released software that has a mass following at a fraction of previous proprietary
software.
Session Title: New Directions in High End CD-ROM Production Systems
Speaker: Richard Keele, Senior Vice President Marketing, Anacomp
Delivering high volumes of customer account data can add value to financial
services. This session will explore the hardware and software components
necessary to provide local access to account data.
Session Title: The Use of CD-ROM in Computer Output to Laser Disk
Speaker: Mason Grigsby, Partner, Imerge Consulting
The use of CD-ROM in COLD systems provides added benefits of portability
and reduced traffic on the network. This session will describe the features
of CD-ROM centric COLD systems and the vendors who supply them.
FEATURED SPEAKERS & MODERATORS: Dave Gillis, Imerge; Philip Green, President,
InMagic; Mason Grigsby, Imerge; Richard Hood, WaterMark; Richard Keele,
Senior VP, Anacomp and Yuki Uchida, Project Manager, Ricoh.
